Wendell Mckenzie 1934-2014

The Darby Island Research Station is deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and caretaker, Wendell Mckenzie. who died at his home in Barraterre in early August. Wendell has been integral to our operations since we moved to Darby Island in 2008. He is our ‘go to’ man for carpentry, plumbing, fishing, boating… you name it, Wendell can do it and fix it. Wendell and his wife Willamae are our Exuma family! We love you and will miss you always… but we know you are watching over us at Darby Island!

Loved througohout Exuma, Wendell was particularly well known for his skill in sailing. Indeed, he has been described as ‘a shining role model for others to follow in the sport of sloop sailing.”   His funeral procession was a fitting send off and tribute to one of the great Exuma sailors… sail on Captain Wendell!
