Carbonate Think Tank, post Ginsburg Symposium, Darby Island, January 2019

An international symposium to honor the legacy of carbonate sedimentologist Robert Nathan Ginsburg was held at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science January 10-12 2019. A post symposium field excursion Jan 14-18 featured modern carbonates of the Bahamas at Little Darby Island. Paul Hoffman (University of Victoria), Noah Planavsky and Lidya Tarhan (Yale), Any White and Erica Suosaari (Smithsonian), Miriam Andres (Zurich) and Pam Reid (University of Miami) visited classic sites of stromatolites, salt ponds, reefs, and sediments. Thanks to Aiden Burrows for transport in the re-built C-hawk! There was avid discussion on all things carbonate, ranging from Precambrian oceans to the majesty of Great Bahama Bank and blue carbon, all from the perspective of the probing Ginburg question “so what?”
