Bahamas Marine EcoCentre will sponsor three summer interns at Bimini Biological Field Station (BBFS) in 2020: Evette Roach, Morgan Bower and Frankiesha Wright, all from New Providence. The interns will spend four weeks at ‘Shark Lab’, working and living with other interns, graduate students and research scientists from around the world.
From a young age, Evette Roach has loved animals and the ocean. These interests were fostered by Bahamas National Trust Discovery Club, including the first Navigators program, turtle tagging with Bahamas Sea Turtle Research Program, and participating as Eco Camp camper and councilor. Her present studies in Veterinary Science at the University of West Indies, Trinidad, combine her love of animals and the ocean as she trains to become an Aquatic Veterinarian when she returns home to the Bahamas. Through her internship at Shark Lab, she hopes to expand her knowledge of sharks and rays in order to promote public awareness of the ecological importance of these magnificent creatures and promote marine conservation.
Morgan Bower grew up splitting her time between the Exuma Cays and New Providence as she helped out with her family business running boat excursions to the Cays. She has always had a passion for environmental conservation and sustainability and a keen interest in local marine life, particularly sharks. Presently majoring in Environmental Studies and Marine Science at Eckerd College, Florida, Morgan plans to return to the Bahamas upon graduation, to start a business that contributes to the Bahamian community and promotes an environmentally conscious society.
Frankiesha Wright is an aspiring marine biologist currently studying at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia. Introduced to field work and research techniques while attending a whale camp organized by Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization (BMMRO), Frankiesha has also interned with Dept of Marine Resources conducting reef checks, participated with Dolphin Encounters, and led snorkel trips with Bahamas National Trust. One of her goals is to create a Bahamian organization that will be a nursery for injured marine organisms and promote conservation.
